Privacy policy
Updated 27 October 2026.
SpotTheCam is a map of speed cameras in Australia and New Zealand, on spotthecam.com and as an Android app. Questions go to workbench.soft@gmail.com.
SpotTheCam has no accounts and no analytics. Your location and trips stay on your phone.
Location
- On the website the map asks for your location only when you press the arrow button. The location stays in the browser.
- In the Android app the app reads your location to warn you about cameras ahead and to record where you went each day. Once you turn on Trips, it reads the location in the background too, with the screen off.
- Physical activity Android tells the app when the phone gets into a vehicle, so recording starts with the app closed.
- Turning it off press Trips, then Turn off. Android settings can also take the location permission away.
Trips
- Where they are in the app's storage on your phone. SpotTheCam doesn't send them anywhere.
- How long the app deletes a day after 400 days. Press Delete this day in Trips to delete it sooner. Uninstalling the app deletes every trip.
- Phone backup when Android backup to your Google account is on, Android may copy the app's storage into it.
Ads
Google shows ads on the map and in the Android app. That pays for the domain.
- On the website Google AdSense. Google sees your IP address and may use cookies. See the Google ads policy. You can opt out of personalised Google ads at Google Ads Settings.
- In the Android app Google AdMob. Google may use the advertising ID of the phone.
- Full-screen ads on the website Google may show one when you open another page. In the app one can appear once a day, and it stays off while the app is recording a drive.
- Consent where the law asks for it, such as in Europe and the UK, Google asks before it shows personalised ads.
What goes over the internet
- The camera list comes from spotthecam.com and GitHub Pages. Their servers see your IP address, like for any web page.
- Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap. Its server sees your IP address and the area you look at, and doesn't keep the IP address in its logs. See the OpenFreeMap privacy policy.
- Your position comes from Google Play services on Android. Google may use Wi-Fi and cell towers for it, under the Google privacy policy.
- Updates the app downloaded from GitHub asks GitHub for a newer version when it opens. The app from Google Play gets its updates from Google Play.
SpotTheCam doesn't sell or share your data.
Children
SpotTheCam is made for drivers and isn't aimed at children.
